I came into instructional design through a side door. Early in my career I noticed that new recruits were struggling — not because the work was beyond them, but because nobody had explained the why behind the what. I volunteered to fix that, and discovered I had a knack for staying in the learner's shoes: breaking processes down, distinguishing genuine training needs from organisational ones, and translating the abstract into the practical.
The shift from face-to-face delivery into design and course construction felt like a natural next step — and one I threw myself into, learning the Articulate and Adobe suites from scratch and finding real satisfaction in the creative process. The arrival of AI has opened that up further: I'm still the one driving the strategy and the pedagogy, but I can now spend more of my time there, which is exactly where I want to be.
